The Point to Discover (p2d) project develops an innovative interaction method that turns your mobile phone into an interactive pointing device: With p2d, you can access information about the environment around you - simply by aiming your mobile phone at the location you are interested in! Imagine you could...

  • point at a bus stop to see when the next buses are leaving
  • point at a tourist landmark to get travel guide information
  • point at an advertisement billboard to take part in a prize draw
  • point at a mountain top to find out the name of the mountain while you are hiking or skiing

The Spatially-Aware Mobile Phone

Almost all information that exists is related to a certain place, area, or geographic location: historical data may be related to buildings or streets; a timetable is related to a bus stop or train station; a photo is related to the place where it was taken.

The Point to Discover project prototypes the technological basis for building "spatially-aware" mobile applications - applications that access, manipulate or produce information related to the vicinity around a mobile user.

The basic "what is this"-point-and-click scenario is one example for a spatially-enabled mobile application that is prototyped in the p2d project. However, it is not the only possible scenario: Several variations of geospatial user interfaces on mobile phones are being developed and compared against each other in a series of user tests.

Project Outline

Point to Discover is a research project of the Telecommunications Research Center Vienna (ftw.) and is conducted in collaboration with mobilkom Austria and Siemens Austria. It is funded by the Austrian competence center programme Kplus.
